Antenatal Care

Continuous pregnancy follow-up: check-ups, labs, counseling.

Safe monitoring and clear instructions through every week of your pregnancy.

Antenatal care is not just a “check-up”, but continuous medical care that we approach with special attention and dedication from the confirmation of pregnancy until delivery. In addition to regular gynecological and ultrasound examinations, at Polyclinic Cito laboratory and diagnostic tests as well as counseling and monitoring of possible complications are available. Our goal is to ensure the health of both mother and child and to recognize on time situations requiring additional workup. We manage pregnancy expertly and individually - with enough time for questions, clear explanations and advice, and a plan you can easily follow.

Page Overview

What is perinatal care (pregnancy management)?

Pregnancy management, or perinatal care, is the planned monitoring of pregnancy through examinations and tests with a clear aim: to confirm the normal development of the pregnancy, to assess the growth and well-being of the fetus, and to detect in time any deviations that require additional work-up or monitoring.

Note: The frequency of follow-ups depends on the weeks of pregnancy, your medical history and any risk factors - which is why we tailor the plan individually.

What pregnancy management may include

How often should you come for check-ups in pregnancy?

Regular check-ups and examinations are adapted to the weeks of pregnancy and the individual needs of the pregnant woman. At the start of pregnancy examinations are less frequent, while in the later weeks they become increasingly frequent, in order to monitor the growth of the baby, the state of the placenta and the mother's health.

  • The usual schedule of check-ups:

1st trimester (up to the 12th–13th week)
the first examination after a positive test or confirmation of pregnancy, then a check-up usually every 4–6 weeks, depending on the findings.
  • 2nd trimester (13th–28th week)
check-ups are most often carried out every 4 weeks.

3rd trimester (28th week to delivery)
examinations are more frequent, usually every 2–3 weeks, and in the final weeks even once a week.

Examinations are most often recommended in the following situations:

Regular monitoring of pregnancy

  • After a positive test and/or confirmation of pregnancy by ultrasound
  • Check-ups according to the weeks of pregnancy and the agreed plan
  • A review of the findings and guidance for the next steps
  • Monitoring of previously known conditions (e.g. thyroid disease, high/low blood pressure, gestational diabetes)

Symptoms and special situations when you should get in touch sooner

  • Bleeding or pain in pregnancy (new or more severe)
  • Suspicion of infection / a raised temperature with complaints
  • High blood pressure, headaches, blurred vision, swelling (assessment)
  • Reduced movements of the baby (in the later weeks)
  • After a finding that requires follow-up (e.g. the cervix, placenta, growth)
The doctor's recommendation: If you have new, more severe or worrying symptoms, do not wait for the “next check-up” - get in touch and we will arrange an examination.

What does a gynaecologist examination during pregnancy look like?

The examination is structured, discreet and unhurried - step by step.

1. Conversation

We talk about how you feel, whether you have any new symptoms, and what the previous findings were. This is an opportunity to ask questions  and to get advice about pregnancy or diet.

2. Pregnancy assessment

When needed, we perform a basic clinical examination and an assessment of general condition (e.g. blood pressure, symptoms, findings).

3. Ultrasound

The ultrasound is performed according to the weeks of pregnancy and medical indications. We assess development, growth, the placenta and amniotic fluid.

4. Plan and recommendations

At the end we explain the findings and the next steps. When the next follow-up is needed, whether additional tests should be done, or whether the pregnancy management plan should be adjusted.

The examination usually lasts  10–30 minutes, depending on the weeks of pregnancy and the scope of the examination (ultrasound, doppler, cervicometry, CTG).
The aim is for you to feel safe and informed -  with clear answers and an agreed plan.

How to prepare for a pregnancy examination?

  • Bring your maternity record book or other documentation and previous findings (if you have them).
  • If you have laboratory results, bring them too (or send them in advance).
  • For most ultrasound examinations there is no need to be fasting.
  • Your partner or another companion may attend the examination if you wish.
  •  If you are taking any therapy, bring a list of medication and doses.

The most common questions before your visit

  • Do I need to be fasting?
As a rule no - for laboratory tests and the glucose test you will receive separate instructions.
  • May I bring old findings?
Yes - they are useful for comparison and decision-making.
  • What if I am worried?
Tell us - we explain the findings in “plain language” and adjust the pace.
Note: At every examination our staff will measure your blood pressure and perform a urine analysis.

Advantages of regular pregnancy monitoring

The aim of examinations as part of pregnancy management is that after each examination you have clear answers, appropriate findings and a plan for the next steps.

1
A clear assessment of pregnancy development
What is normal, and what requires a follow-up or further work-up.
2
A recommendation (with a reason)
If additional tests are needed (e.g. doppler, cervicometry, a prenatal test), you get a clear “why” and “when”.
3
A care plan by weeks
Arranging follow-ups and monitoring - without ambiguity and without “googling”.

In practice this means

  • an explanation of the findings simply and understandably
  • a follow-up plan tailored to you (not “the same for everyone”)
  • instructions on which symptoms to watch for and when to seek help
  • coordination of tests by indication (CTG, doppler, prenatal screening)
Discreet
Clear
Safe
