The anomaly scan, also known as the week 20 ultrasound (performed between weeks 18 - 22), shows the detailed morphology of the fetus and provides a calmer continuation of the pregnancy.
Together with the mini anomaly scan, this is the non-invasive and most detailed ultrasound examination in pregnancy through which fetal anatomy and key developmental parameters are assessed in the second trimester. The goal is to confirm normal development and identify in time findings that require additional workup or follow-up. The anomaly scan (morphological ultrasound) is an examination most often performed between the 18th and 22nd week of pregnancy. During this period it is possible to assess the baby's anatomy in detail. The brain, heart (four heart chambers), diaphragm, stomach, bladder, spine, sex, limbs and placenta are examined, along with a check for developmental abnormalities.
It also includes measurements such as head size, abdominal circumference and femur length.
Note: The anomaly scan is a “detailed morphology” - but sometimes a follow-up (e.g. due to the baby's position) or additional work-up by indication is required.
An anomaly scan should be done in every pregnancy. The aim of the examination is to detect structural congenital anomalies (e.g. spina bifida, cleft lip, cardiac anomalies) and to check the normal development of the baby. Although it is very precise, it should be noted that it cannot detect all potential developmental anomalies.
