Menopause – Gynecological Examination

Menopause is a natural life stage, but symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, mood changes, vaginal dryness or frequent urinary tract infections can significantly affect the quality of life. At Polyclinic Cito we perform a comprehensive gynecological assessment, ultrasound and laboratory workup when needed, and build a safe and individualized plan – from non-hormonal measures to hormone therapy, providing a complete service in one place.

Page Overview

What is menopause?

Menopause is the time that marks the end of your menstrual cycles. It is diagnosed after 12 months have passed without a period. It can happen in your 40s or 50s, but the average age is 52.

This is followed by postmenopause - a period in which hormone levels stabilise at lower values, and certain symptoms may persist.

Note: Menopause is not a disease, but the symptoms are real and can often be successfully treated - the aim is to find an option that suits you and that is safe.

Why do the symptoms occur?

The drop in oestrogen affects several systems in the body, so menopause can manifest through:

  • vasomotor symptoms (hot flushes, night sweats)
  • sleep disturbances and fatigue
  • changes in mood and concentration
  • urogenital complaints (vaginal dryness, soreness, frequent urination)
  • changes in the skin, hair and metabolism

When is an examination in menopause recommended?

The examination is useful both when you want confirmation that the symptoms are related to menopause, and when you need a solution that brings relief.

Prevention and check-ups

  • regular gynaecological examinations in menopause
  • assessment of urogenital health (dryness, discomfort, infections)
  • counselling on bone health and cardiovascular risk
  • assessment of treatment options and monitoring of the effect

Symptoms and special situations

  • hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia lasting weeks/months
  • marked vaginal dryness, burning, pain during intercourse
  • frequent urination, recurrent urinary infections
  • mood changes, irritability, “brain fog”
A quick decision: Any bleeding after menopause (after 12 months without a period) requires medical assessment as soon as possible.

What does the examination and plan in menopause look like?

The focus is on your symptoms and the safety of the therapy, with an individual approach.

1. Conversation and medical history

We talk about the symptoms, their duration and their impact on sleep and quality of life, as well as previous therapies and family history.

2. Gynaecological examination

It looks like the examinations you had before menopause. It is performed by an expert gynaecologist, discreetly and gently, with an explanation of each step

3. Ultrasound (if needed)

By ultrasound we assess the uterus and the thickness of the endometrium, especially in cases of bleeding, pain or other symptoms.

4. Plan

The plan may include non-hormonal measures, local therapy for urogenital symptoms, systemic therapy or a follow-up plan.

If needed, we do targeted tests (e.g. thyroid, anaemia, lipids, vitamin D - as assessed), especially if the symptoms may have several causes.
If hormonal therapy is being considered, we assess the indications, risks and contraindications and choose the safest option and dose.

How to prepare for the examination in menopause?

  • Note your symptoms: when they occur, how often, what worsens/improves them.
  • Bring previous findings (Pap/HPV, ultrasound, mammography/breast ultrasound if you have them).
  • A list of medicines and supplements (including herbal preparations).

If you have chronic illnesses (high or low blood pressure, diabetes, a thyroid disorder), bring documentation from your last check-up (if you have it).

Frequently asked questions before you arrive

  • Do I need to fast?
No, unless we arrange fasting laboratory tests in advance.
  • May I come if I have dryness and soreness?
Yes, tell us in advance so that we can adapt the examination.
  • I had bleeding after menopause, what now?
Get in touch as soon as possible; a targeted assessment is needed.
Note:To make the examination as comfortable as possible, we advise using local vaginal hydration before the examination for comfort.

What do you gain from this examination?

The examination is not just a confirmation of menopause, but an assessment of the symptoms and a choice of therapy that can bring you relief.
