Gynecological Examination

Gynecological examination - a complete checkup of the female reproductive system

One of the core preventive visits for women's health, it offers a detailed assessment of the external and internal reproductive organs. It enables early detection of changes and further evaluation of symptoms such as bleeding, pain, discharge or irregular cycles. When needed, it includes a gynecological ultrasound and additional tests (Pap, HPV, swabs). At Polyclinic Cito the exam is performed discreetly and thoroughly, with enough time for questions and a clear explanation of the findings.

Page Overview

What is a gynaecological examination?

A medical examination of the female reproductive system performed by a gynaecologist. It includes a conversation with the doctor about your general health and concerns, a clinical examination and, where needed, a 2D ultrasound and cytological assessment. The whole examination does not take long, and through an individual approach we build a relationship of trust that eases any discomfort and makes it easier for you to talk about the concerns troubling you. The goal is the timely detection of changes, the prevention of disease, the treatment of symptoms and the preservation of reproductive health.

Note: It is recommended once a year for prevention, and more often depending on the findings or your doctor's recommendation. At our polyclinic we also carry out comprehensive gynaecological check-ups to safeguard our patients' reproductive health.

What the examination may include

  • A conversation about your general condition and symptoms
  • A clinical examination (external and internal)
  • Ultrasound (2D or 3D/4D ultrasound as indicated)
  • Pap test / HPV testing (if needed)
  • Explanation of the findings and a treatment plan

When is a gynaecological examination recommended?

You do not come for an examination only when "something is wrong"; a regular check-up helps to detect changes in time. We tailor the examination to your age, complaints and plans, whether you are just starting sexual activity, planning a pregnancy or entering perimenopause. For prevention or when you have symptoms, these are the most common reasons for coming:

Prevention and check-ups

  • A first examination (it can also be educational in nature, before or 6 months after first sexual intercourse)
  • An annual preventive check-up (even when you have no symptoms)
  • A review of previous findings or therapy
  • Monitoring of cysts, fibroids, endometriosis (as recommended)
  • Perimenopause / menopause: symptoms and counselling

Symptoms and special situations

A quick decision: If you have bleeding that is not usual, recurring pain or changes in discharge, it is better to come earlier; the problem is often easily resolved when detected in time.

What does a gynaecological examination look like?

The examination is structured, discreet and unhurried – step by step.

1. Conversation

The first step is taking your medical history: a detailed conversation about your general condition, menstrual cycle, history of illness, any therapies, the number of pregnancies and deliveries, and gynaecological symptoms.

2. Clinical examination

While the patient lies on the gynaecological chair, the gynaecologist performs an external, bimanual and/or speculum examination.

3. 2D ultrasound or Pap test

A complete gynaecological examination is hard to imagine without a gynaecological 2D ultrasound. Performing a Pap test or cervical swabs is recommended depending on the indications.

4. Plan and recommendations

After the previous steps, we give a clear explanation of the findings and specific instructions for the next steps.

The examination most often lasts between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on the extent of the tests required. It is important to us that you have enough time for all your questions, so that the examination takes place in an atmosphere of trust and without any sense of being rushed.

The approach is tailored to each patient, with the aim that you feel both safe and well informed.

How to prepare for the examination?

Good preparation before a gynaecological examination can significantly contribute to the accuracy of the findings and the comfort of the patient. A few simple steps help to make the examination and the findings as precise as possible.

  • Basic intimate hygiene is sufficient. In the 24–48 h beforehand, avoid intercourse and vaginal creams, gels and sprays.
  • The optimal time for a routine examination (if it is not urgent): between the 5th and 10th day of the menstrual cycle.

  • Choose comfortable clothing for easier changing and a feeling of relaxation.

  • Prepare a list of questions you would like to ask the doctor.

  • Bring any previous documentation and a list of your therapy (if you have them).

Quick check before you arrive

  • Do I need to fast?
As a rule no, unless laboratory tests have been arranged in advance.
  • May I bring old findings?
Yes - they are useful for comparison and making decisions.
  • What if I feel fear or discomfort?
Tell us - we adjust the pace and explain everything step by step.
Note:If you have pronounced symptoms (pain, bleeding, unpleasant discharge) - the examination is performed even when it is not the “ideal time”. The most important thing is that you receive an assessment and a plan.

What do you gain from this examination?

Peace of mind, clarity and a plan - without guesswork.

1
An assessment of your health
An examination and, if needed, a gynaecological 2D or 3D/4D ultrasound

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about this service

How to prepare for a gynecological examination (is abstinence required, can it be done during menstruation)?

No specific preparation is required. It is advisable to avoid vaginal products and intercourse 24–48 h before the exam. A routine check-up is best performed outside menstruation; in urgent or specific indications the exam can also be done during bleeding.

What does a standard gynecological examination include and how long does it last?

It includes a history, inspection of the external genitalia, bimanual palpation when needed, a Pap test and a transvaginal ultrasound. It usually lasts 15-30 minutes, depending on the findings and additional procedures.

Will the exam hurt and how is discomfort reduced?

A gynecological exam should not be painful, but it may be uncomfortable. Appropriately sized specula and lubrication are used; in cases of hypersensitivity the procedure is adapted and postponed when needed.

How often is a preventive examination recommended?

For asymptomatic women an annual examination is recommended, with a Pap test according to age and guidelines. In the presence of symptoms or risk factors, check-ups are more frequent based on the physician's assessment.
