The first gynecological visit is an important step for your health, but it is completely normal to feel discomfort, fear or shyness. At Polyclinic Cito we approach it calmly and with respect. We explain every step, and our goal is to make you feel safe. The visit is an opportunity to receive answers to questions about the cycle, discharge, contraception, sexual health, painful periods and prevention.
The first gynaecological examination is about getting to know your health and needs. It most often includes a conversation, a clinical examination (when appropriate) and, if needed, an ultrasound. The examination is tailored to your age, symptoms and whether you are sexually active.
Note: The first examination does not have to mean “all tests at once”. We do only what is necessary and what is appropriate for you at that moment.
It is most often recommended in adolescence, after the start of sexual intercourse or when gynaecological symptoms appear. Some girls come for prevention, and some because of symptoms – both reasons are equally important.
A conversation about menstruation, symptoms, general health, and questions about contraception and sexual health is the most important step.
If you are not yet sexually active, the examination consists only of a conversation and an ultrasound over the abdomen.
We explain the steps of the examination in detail. We take enough time for all your questions, with a relaxed atmosphere and a feeling of trust. All with your consent at every step.
The examination is gentle and discreet; in some patients only an external examination is performed, without an internal examination. If further assessment is needed, the uterus and ovaries can be examined by ultrasound over the abdomen.
After the examination you receive a medical report, which we explain in detail, and we give the necessary advice. You get answers on what to monitor, whether therapy, a follow-up or additional tests are needed.
If possible, the examination is easiest to do outside menstruation (mid-cycle), unless you are coming because of bleeding or an urgent complaint.
Discomfort or nerves before the first gynaecological examination are very common. The recommendation is between the ages of 13–15 for education or earlier if problems exist (pain, absence of menstruation, heavy/painful bleeding).
The emphasis is on conversation and education; the exam is adapted to the age. The presence of a parent or guardian is mandatory for underage patients.
In adolescents, an external exam and a transabdominal ultrasound are most often performed; an internal exam is performed only when medically necessary.
Confidentiality is guaranteed; topics such as the cycle, contraception and sexual health are addressed discreetly and professionally.
