3D ultrasound gives a static view of the anatomical structure in a three-dimensional (volumetric) display, while 4D ultrasound shows the 3D image moving in real time. In gynaecology they are used for a more precise insight into the anatomy (e.g. the uterus, endometrium, ovaries), and in pregnancy for a realistic and clear view of the foetus, and for additional assessment where it is useful.
During pregnancy these examinations are very important and allow a more detailed insight into the development of the foetus. This technology provides a clear view of the facial structure and can help in spotting certain anomalies. It also allows the spine to be examined from different angles and a volumetric view of the brain, which gives doctors additional information about the development of important structures.
